Hi Katrine,

I have noticed a decline in my page speed score after adding videos to my product pages via the "embed media by URL" link. Is there a better way I should be doing this? I know that Plak comes with the option for adding video and it doesn't slow down the site but I thought this was the correct way to do it.

Thank you

Hi Aden,

Jasmine from Plak Theme support,

For product page, if you would like to use videos without impacting the page speed I recommend using :

  • An embedded video instead of Youtube video and disable the autoplay from the theme editor, a good example is this product where the gtmetrix score is 100%

  • Or you can use the video section or/and the custom content section to insert a video below your product description, this will allow you to add a Youtube/vimeo videos and using a poster without having any impact on the page speed. This demo store is a good example for Youtube speed friendly video

For now, using a Youtube video on the featured product.thumbnails has some impact on the page speed, we will try to find a way to make it speed friendly on the next release.

For your info, beyond the speed, an embedded video has another advantage over Youtube : Visitors won't be distracted by the (similar videos) shown on the Youtube video and will stay on your product page to increase the chance to reach checkout.

Let me know if you have any other questions

Jasmine

Hi Jasmine,

Thank you for this info. It makes perfect sense not to use Youtube and I didn't even think about the possibility that visitors might be taken away from the website because of that.

I went in and deleted the Yountube videos, and then I embedded them by uploading them directly to the product page into the media section of the Shopify site.  I made sure to disable the autoplay as you suggested, but this made the page size much worse and loaded all the video MB into the size of the page.   Did I do this incorrectly?

I went to your store and checked a product using an embedded video, the original video size is 26.2 mb and the page size upon loading shows only 2.7mb which means that the video is not preloaded and this is a good sign that the non-preload feature is working.

Also, the page speed on gtmetrix is great

Alternatively, you can use an online video compressor like this one to reduce the video size to its minimum without impacting the quality.

Don't hesitate to let us know if there is anything wrong.

Kind regards,
Jasmine

Jasmine,

That is the correct page and the only I am am testing so thank you.  I am uploading another screenshot from that same GT test for the same product, but its data from down below.  It says my page size is high.  Does this not get taken into account for the score?  I assume it doesn't matter because it isn't preloading the video, but it seems to know the final video size either way.  Thanks!
