Hi all,
As you know, on our themes, we have different product page templates, where you can place the thumbnails either on the left of the featured product image or below it.
The answer depends on the featured product photo ratio, Let's take a look first on how the product page looks for different image ratios :

Thumbnails next to the featured image
- If your featured product photo ration is 1:1
- If your featured product photo ration is 2:1
- If your featured product photo ration is 1:2

- If your featured product photo ration is 1:1
- If your featured product photo ration is 2:1
- If your featured product photo ration is 1:2
As you noticed from the different examples above, sometimes the thumbnails are partially or totally hidden for the visitor viewport, and the user needs to scroll top and down which hurts the UX.
So improving the User Experience, depends on the featured product photo size/ratio and the thumbnails position.
We conclude that :
- If your product photo ratio is 1:1 or its height is bigger than its width, then the best position of the thumbnails is Next to the featured product image
- If your product photo ratio is 2:1 or its height is shorter than its width, then the best position of the thumbnails is below the featured product image

Thank you so much for the explanation. I didn't know that the thumbnails position depends on the image size and ratio.
For now my product images are square (ratio 1:1) and I like the thumbnails on the left side.
