Please read it till the end to ensure that you understand all that I have mentioned. If you have any questions in between, please do not hesitate to write them down in the comment section below and I will get back to you at the earliest. Now, let’s get started with the tips.
Do not use numbers and hyphens
Numbers can be confusing when it comes to recalling your domain name. If you say, “four” the listener may confuse it with the numeral 4 at times and if they type that in the address bar, they will not find your Shopify store. It is better to avoid numbers.
Hyphens too do not look very good on your domain name, and it doesn’t look very professional. Hence, it is recommended not to use hyphens.
Focus on your Target Market
While determining a domain name, think about the target market, in terms of the demography and the location of your store. If you are catering to a local group, you may want to incorporate the name of the locality or state or even the specific group of your target customers.
If your products are targeted towards the teenagers, probably you can use the word “teen” in the domain name so that they can relate to it.
Do use keywords
Using keywords is a masterstroke, and it can give your business a great boost right at the start of it. However, it is not very easy to use your keywords in the domain name because most of those won’t be available, and you have to bend it a little bit. However, it is undoubtedly worthwhile to give it a try and use your business keywords in your domain name.
Choose words easy to type
Do not use harsh words which are not easy to type or remember. If the customer cannot type your domain name correctly in the browser address bar, they will never land on your Shopify store, and in the worse case, they may land up on your competitor’s page with a similar name.
Hence, it is recommended to choose something easy to type online.
Keep it short and simple
As they say, the KISS (Keep it Short and Simple) methodology in arriving at your domain name always do wonders. Do not make longer or more complex domain names if not needed. The simplicity in your domain name will make it memorable, which is my next point.
Make it memorable
There are many ways to make your domain name memorable to your clients, but try to think of a name which anyone can recall after a specific time even if they did not buy from you or watch your advertisements. Customers are more likely to return to your Shopify store if they can remember your domain name easily.
Research the name
Once you have a few probable names for your Shopify store domain, it is time to do some proper research on them. You must ensure that the name is not copyrighted, trademarked, or used by some other company somewhere else. Do a lot of research and only after you are satisfied, go ahead with finalizing the name.
Do it fast
One thing that the domain name market works on is availability. Thousands of new domain names are bought by people every hour, from all over the world. Act fast to ensure that the domain name that you have selected is available and is not acquired by someone else while you were busy in brainstorming or researching.
Build and protect your brand
Many people buy various related domains with different extensions or misspelled domain names etc., to protect their brand so that in the future none other can claim their business. You may want to do that as well to protect the brand that you build around your domain name.
Consider an appropriate domain name extension
Using an appropriate domain name extension is essential for the business. Even though .com is accepted for any businesses, it is important to choose the right extension if you want to take your business to the next level. Here are some top extension names which are used for various business types:
.co : an abbreviation for company, commerce, and community.
.info : informational sites.
.net : professional, Internet infrastructure sites.
.org : non-commercial organizations and nonprofits.
.biz : business or commercial use, like e-commerce sites.
.me : blogs, resumes or personal sites.
That is all I have to tell while choosing a domain name for your business. I hope the concepts are clear now. If you have any questions, please ask in the comments, and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks for being here. I will be back with another article soon.

oh thanks for the quick and accurate response 🙂
if you are targeting USA and If you are planning for big values, we suggest to go with .com
a .us domain name will be helpful for local search from search engines than .com, but that effect will be very nominal.
And psychologically, the visitors will always think that .COM is better than .US
Moreover, one day you’ll want to expand your business abroad, so just stick with .COM
In general .US .FR .CA, … or whatever is used by website for language translation and local targeting, like ebay.ca, ebay.us, ebay.fr, …
what is better for a USA loacetd business, a .us or .com domain name ? thanks in advance
