Paid advertising is an online placement of ads on relevant platforms (Facebook, Google, Pinterest, Twitter, …) for which an advertiser pays per click or per impression to gain leads toward a landing page. The main advantage of paid ads over SEO is that you will get instant traffic as soon as your ad campaign got approved by the advertiser platform. But an SEO friendly eCommerce store has high quality traffic and by consequence a better Conversion Rate, because people landed on your page after having searched for a special keyword on a search engine.
